Reduce Healthcare Acquired Infections (HAI) with Non-Porous Surfaces

What does non-porous mean? Non-porous simply means that liquids and air cannot penetrate the material. The correct temperature, moisture, oxygen and the correct PH are required for bacteria to thrive. This means that any porous material can be a favorable medium for bacterial growth.

Healthcare facilities now know that HAI is a considerable problem and most have an Infection Control Plan to reduce it. The environments of an emergency room, intensive care unit and laboratories are extreme and the surfaces always incur damage. Any Facilities Department at any health system will tell you that plastic laminate cabinetry will corrode, peel and chip. Once damage occurs the cabinetry has to be repaired or replaced to maintain a non-porous surface.

When considering the cost of new cabinetry, it is important to consider the overall cost. Will your Facilities Department be able to repair the surfaces? How much time and material will a typical surface repair require? What is the lifespan of your surfaces? What is the cost (moral and financial) of a patient leaving your health system with a health problem they didn’t arrive with?
